In the latest issue of People Management (July 10) there is an interesting article about some senior HR people whose job titles have changed to reflect their wider remit. The article explores what this might mean for the profession.

Seth Godin’s post on Marketing HR suggests changing the name of the department to Talent. I like that. I like it because it separates the routine operations that surround the employment of people from the strategic requirement to attract and retain the calibre of people needed to set an organisation apart.

Have you noticed how good it feels to set a goal for yourself and then go on to achieve it? So what is it that makes the difference between those goals we do achieve and those we don’t?
One thing is certain - that if you know what you’re setting out to achieve you are much more likely to accomplish it. This may seem obvious, yet all too often the goals we set ourselves, both personally and in business, are extremely vague and therefore unlikely to be achieved.

One of the greatest attributes an HR practitioner (indeed anyone!) can have is a positive mindset.
This is because HR is often blamed for many of the organisation’s ills – bad management, poor employment practices, stupid initiatives, the list goes on… but also, because people management is often seen as purely common sense. Largely I agree with this, but have been frequently disappointed over the years at the frequency with which common sense goes out of the window when dealing with people.
So, how can a positive mindset help the HR practitioner to be successful at what s/he does?

This article: "Employees are our most valuable asset (snigger)" considers employees from an IT perspective. It starts with my favourite Dilbert cartoon – on the home page of my website – about employees being an organisation’s most valuable asset (actually, not…).

These days one thing we can rely on is that we don’t know what is around the corner.
Whether it’s the impact of the credit crunch, a takeover or merger, cost cutting or expansion into new business areas, these changes bring uncertainty and we wonder what the impact will be for our business and for us personally.
