Don’t hire people falling upwards

Beware of ‘soft’ recruitment processes! By this I mean just hiring people on recommendation without a rigorous assessment of the fit between the candidates and the job role. When I was working in the oil industry in the 80s, I was presented with a fait accompli like this on a number of occasions, only to be consulted some months later about how to get rid of the offending person!

Geoffrey King, a former headhunter says “Recruiters, in my view, have been guilty of promoting a disease that was first given a name in Hollywood – it describes people who have an uncanny knack of consistently making a hash of what they do, but still get the key jobs. In Hollywood the disease is called "Falling upwards". And the boardrooms of industry are full of people who are riddled with this pestilence.”
