Secrets, lies and career plans |
Research by BlessingWhite , an HR consultancy, shows that British employees do not have much trust in their bosses when it comes to discussing their career plans. This is particularly prevalent in 16-24 year olds. Maybe this is because younger workers are less clear on their goals. It still provides worrying evidence that British managers are not tapping into the interests and aspirations of their employees. Recruitment is expensive and when an employee leaves, your investment and their knowledge walk out of the door. So it makes sense to use regular dialogue, including appraisals, to understand what motivates your employees. This is vital information to understand how to put their strengths and talents to work – improving their motivation and benefiting businesses. I suspect that it’s focus on task, not people that stops this happening in organisations - it’s such a waste of talent. |
