Why waste time justifying our existence?

The lead article on a recent Personnel Today is ‘Fast pace of change means opportunity knocks for HR’ . Isn’t that stating the bleeding obvious?

Theresa Winters, Unilever HR Business Partner, is quoted as saying ‘The biggest challenge for HR is gaining credibility that it adds value to the business. HR needs to get around the top table and be part of a business.’ I believe HR’s biggest challenge is to stop talking about it and start DOING it.

You never hear other professionals in business support services such as Finance or IT talking about how they add value to the business and yet this is something HR practitioners are constantly doing.

It is by demonstrating the value of involving HR (and early on) in the process of organisational change that directors and leaders will see the benefits of doing so. So, HR colleagues, to quote Nike, just do it!
