When to hire a coach

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." ~ Henry David Thoreau

"You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself." ~ Galileo

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left?
Answer: five
Why? Because there's a difference between deciding and doing. ~ Mark L. Feldman & Michael F. Spratt

Coaching can be pretty hard to explain to someone. It's something we coaches often struggle with! But the results that you can achieve with the support of a coach are remarkable.

The origins of coaching come from sport. All great athletes have a coach. The coach helps the athlete hone her skills, build on her strengths, focus, understand what she is doing when she is on top form, maintain a positive approach, find new ways of doing things when she feels stuck or reaches a plateau.

If you're a tennis fan you'll have seen what a difference Ivan Lendl has made to Andy Murray's performance - a critical ingredient to him winning Wimbledon this year. Which highlights another important thing - finding the person who is the right coach for YOU.

So why work with a coach?

Coaching brings outstanding results if you're doing well and want to excel or get even better in a specific area of your life - work or relationships, for example.

Or maybe there's something you've been wanting to do for a long time. Achieve that dream you've dabbled with but not really done anything serious about, change your job or career, start a business, travel somewhere new.

Here are some examples of when coaching can support you to achieve the results you want:

- you have a specific goal in mind and want support to achieve it

- you feel stuck, listless, apathetic and you're desperate to move on, but don't know how or the things you've tried so far don't work

- you've got a decision to make - but you can't decide on the way forward

- you've got an issue or challenge you're facing and want to talk it through with someone impartial.

Whatever it is, now you're serious about taking action.

Resistance is there for a reason. Acknowledge it. What's the fear behind it? It might be fear of success rather than failure. Use your fear as fuel.

If you are clear about what you want to achieve and don't know how or haven't yet succeeded in getting there on your own, coaching will support you to get it. The bolder your goal, the more a coach can serve you. Coaches are for those situations where other accelerators won't get the job done. That's why it justifies the investment.

And taking action in one area of your life is likely to impact positively on others too.

Coaching is not a soft option. Like anything you achieve in life it requires your trust, commitment and action. You will be asked difficult questions, you will experience discomfort. You'll get, as one client said 'constant, gentle challenge plus unfailing support and belief in me.'

No-one needs a coach, yet working with one can make the difference between staying where you are and achieving the goal you (say you) desire.

Will you act on that desire?

The only way to find out if coaching is the way for you to achieve the results you want is to experience it for yourself.

I have two coaching slots opening up in the New Year. If you want to take action, contact me to arrange a complimentary conversation.

Who knows where that might lead?
